The Parable of Vael In World of Warcraft
So we were mana-efficient — and known for it, too. This was great when we had to fight Vael in BWL. Big fight, the kind that destroyed guilds. Back in those days, you’d wipe for days, for weeks, sometimes over a month on a tough boss, and that’s just the way it was. We didn’t have overprivileged sissies who wanted to quit after three or five wipes. Heh, three to five wipes — we were still warming up. Weren’t even limber yet, you know, still getting our buzz going and haven’t even tapped the second keg.
One of the mechanics of Vael is that it randomly killed people. No way out of it, you’re gonna die. All you could do was run out to the designated death spot so you didn’t take any of your raid with you when you blew yourself to smithereens. Well, what with 40 people in the raid back in those days, we had warlock soulstones to go around.
Now, I’m not one to say much good about warlocks, but I will say this. Back in those days, no warlock ever let his soulstone go to waste. A warlock who didn’t have a soulstone on someone at all times had his dress taken away and was chased into the woods, where he became a NPC. No one wants a fate like that, so them ‘locks spent the hour before every raid killing stuff to fill their bags with soulstones. Not like ‘locks today. Can’t remember the last time I saw one actually use his damned soulstone, no matter how much easier
There are no rules In World of Warcraft
Despite all that I’ve written, however, you must remember that in the end, there are no rules. Although I generally follow these guidelines whenever I go around Azeroth, I don’t expect other players to have the same code of honor. For one thing, if everyone refused to attack first, there’d be no world PvP, and that would be exceedingly sad for me. I expect enemy players to attack first and welcome the challenge. It gives me a reason to fight. Not that anybody really needs one on a PvP server, but at least nobody can say I griefed them (which really makes me wonder how I get on some guilds’ K.O.S. lists — but hey, you can’t win ‘em all).
None of these rules apply, and the honest truth is that nobody really cares if you follow them or not. As unfair as it sounds, you will almost never get a reputation for being an honorable fighter, no matter how hard you try, but you’re guaranteed to get a reputation for being a filthy one if you engage in constant griefing and other less savory behavior. The latter also seems to be a motivation for some players who would rather play in infamy rather than anonymity. Playing fair is a personal choice, as with most of the things we do in this game. For the most part, do it for your own peace of mind. Unless you’re the kind of player who enjoys uneven contests, a simple code of conduct should help you enjoy your time on a PvP realm without disrupting the way
We all suspected that the star pony might have ulterior motives. Yumfries has blown the lid off the conspiracy with Nub Tales ep. 1: Celestial Steed (the tears of noobs). In a moment of brilliant revelation, we learn that the star pony is not made up of simply stars, but also filled with the tears of noobs. The video then goes on to reveal a dastardly plan as clever as any I have ever heard.
I think this is a fun video from Yumfries, but also fills an important community role. This is a player responding to something that’s happened in the game, but also the community follow-up after that action. It’s also poking fun at the vast overreaction among the WoW community about a horse. Of course, that whole thing just seemed like a snowball to me, rolling down a mountain. It started off as a blip and turned into this gigantic controversy that we’ve all since forgotten about.
The Emerald Dream can be visited in dreams of in the flesh. Although the druids enter the plane through their connection with nature, accessing the Emerald Dream via more conventional magic is possible, but the plane’s natives do not look kindly on intruders.
Some creatures cannot help but dream of the plane and find themselves there without any preparation or conscious intent; these dreaming creatures arrive in the Emerald Dream and often have prophetic and helpful visions. Other creatures intentionally use dreams to reach the Emerald Dream, such as the druids.
When an individual’s spirit visits the Dream, leaving the body behind, that individual will manifest his or her dream form, which normally looks and behaves much as that individual’s physical body might. Hence, for most creatures, moving through the Dream is achieved in the normal fashion, despite the realm’s chiefly spiritual character. These rules do not apply to druids of sufficient skill or experience, who are trained to see beyond physical reality. These druids might be capable of abnormal movement in the Dream (e.g., a night elf who can sprint at a greatly accelerated rate, walk through solid objects, or fly). It is quite rare to see such unusual capabilities in non-druids, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility.

I think everyone who plays understands that World of Warcraft is a hugely popular game, played by millions across the globe. Well, today the New York Times ponders the game’s immense success and international appeal. What World of Warcraft has meant to the MMO genre is summarized succinctly, I think, in this statement by the Times:
There were massively-multiplayer games before World of Warcraft, just as there were MP3 players before Apple’s iPod. Like the iPod, World of Warcraft has essentially taken over and redefined an entire product category.
Joystiq also points out something interesting in the tone of the article – namely, that it does not immediately assume games and gaming are negative things. Instead, it presents an open minded look at gaming as a hobby.

If the tank in your last pickup group seemed more than a little evil to you, perhaps you’re closer to home than you realize. Perhaps that death knight was actually World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight and dedicated WoW fan Jens “Little Evil” Pulver. The former UFC lightweight champion blows off steam after a hard day of training with a well developed roster of WoW characters, some well known to his fans and others known only to close friends and guildmates.
The former The Ultimate Fighter 5 reality show coach has always been a gamer. His passion for gaming was recognized recently when he was immortalized as an NPC in Vogster Entertainment’s CrimeCraft. He’s been a devoted WoW player from the very start. His rogue, Lilevil, earned Grand Marshal status back in the days when grinding the ultimate PvP title was a grind of almost unimaginably enormous proportions.
Back in the ring (and after a heartbreaking stretch of losses), Pulver is slated to face Javier Vazquez on March 6 at WEC 47. We chatted with him by phone last week during a break in his pre-fight training regimen.
